Gilea ("wood") - ancient Greek name of the area in Scythia
"Gilea"
- is the first futuristic cubist group. They were also called "Cubofuturists"
or "Budetlyans". The members of the group put the double meaning
into the name of "Gilea". First all the members of the union were
Ukrainians (except for Kamensky) with the ancient Cossack genealogies
- Burlyuks, Mayakovsky, Khlebnikov, or had the Geographical rooms
in Ukraine - Guro, Livshits. Second the society oriented itself
to the archaic art of Ukraine.
The idea of creating the group appeared still in 1908. "We just
didn't notice the fact of having become the members of "Gilea".
It happened by itself, by the mutual silent agreement, the same
way as having been conscious of the commonness of our goals and
objectives we didn't take Hannibal's oath of fidelity to any kind
of principles from one another" (B. Livshits). That was the reason
why the group didn't have a permanent membership. But it had the
fundament. That was made by the people represented here: David,
Vladimir and Nikolai Burlyuk, Alexey Kruchyonykh, Benedikt Livshits,
Vladimir Mayakovsky, Viktor Khlebnikov. The public declaration of
the "Gilea" group took place in St. Petersburg, at the beginning
of 1910. "Gilea" group first manifested itself in St. Petersburg,
at the beginning of 1910. It included David and Nikolai Burlyuk,
V. Khlebnikov, V. Kamensky, E. Guro, V. Mayakovsky, A. Kruchyonykh,
B. Livshits.
